Algae, Textiles, and Ecology: Making Yarn from Seaweed

from €75.00

Saturday, August 15, 10:00 - 13:30 at Manywhere Gallery, Porto, PT

Join me for an introduction to creating experimental yarns from alginate, a seaweed-derived biopolymer used in biomaterial research and sustainable textile practices. Through hands-on making, participants transform liquid alginate into soft filament-like strands.

Participants will experiment with mixing, extruding, twisting, and drying alginate strands to create yarns that can be woven, stitched, or knotted. The workshop explores the intersection of textiles, biology, and ecology while encouraging attentiveness to texture, durability, fragility, and transformation. The addition of natural pigments and yarn modification using other media will be explored.

Participants leave with handmade samples and foundational techniques for working with algae-based biomaterials, and will have an opportunity to showcase their creations as part of my exhibition closing on August 29.

This workshop is perfect for artists and individuals interested in sustainable new materials, ecology, textiles, as well as anyone playfully curious!

All materials included.
