Introduction to Bio Yarn (Porto)

$80.00

An introduction to creating experimental yarns from alginate, a seaweed-derived biopolymer used in biomaterial research and sustainable textile practices. Through hands-on making, participants transform liquid alginate into soft filament-like strands.

Participants experiment with pulling, extruding, twisting, and drying alginate strands to create yarns that can be woven, stitched, knotted, or combined with natural fibers. The workshop explores the intersection of textiles, biology, and ecology while encouraging attentiveness to texture, durability, fragility, and transformation. The addition of natural pigments and yarn modification using other media will be explored.

Participants leave with handmade samples and foundational techniques for working with alginate-based biomaterials. All materials included.
